When Do I Start?
A Quick Garden Reference for
Southeast Michigan
Planning your vegetable and fruit garden in southeast Michigan requires careful consideration of planting times due to the region's climate. According to data provided by Garden.Org, the average last spring frost date in this area is around April 27, and the first fall frost typically occurs near October 17. This would provide a growing season of approximately 174 days.
In reality, we have seen much later spring and fall frost dates (The Plant Guys like to say, “Save your plants for Mother’s Day”); however, the length of the growing season is pretty spot on.
In addition to this chart, Michigan State University Extension offers a comprehensive Garden Planning Calendar that provides month-by-month guidance for gardeners in Michigan.
